One of the famous shipwrecks in Lake Superior is the SS Edmund Fitzgerald. The tragedy even generated a hit song, memorials, and conspiracies about its ill-fated journey. Sadly, Fitzgerald is just one of many wrecks; there are a number of ships that succumbed to the treacherous waters of Lake Superior. The area near the Whitefish Bay in Whitefish Point, Michigan is notorious claiming many sea vessels traversing its territory. This dangerous passage in the south of Lake Superior has been referred to as the “Graveyard of the Great Lakes” and “Shipwreck Coast”. It is a place where hundreds of ships sunk and thousands of lives lost. Shipping Still FlourishesEvery year a staggering amount of 200 million net tons of commerce passing through the Great Lakes. The country’s lake fleets alongside with the Canadian’s carriers, tankers, bulk freighters, tugs, and barges haul these massive shipments of cargo. Around 40% of the cargo includes mined minerals like iron ore, coal, salt, and stone. The other percent composes of agricultural products like corn, wheat, oats, and soybeans. Even though the waters of the Great Lakes pose a perilous journey for these brave sailors, they still make sure that the shipping industry still flourishes. from LIVNFRESH http://blog.livnfresh.com/lake-superior-depth-and-shipping-flourishes-despite-tragedies/ from Livnfresh Share Your State Pride. http://livnfresh.tumblr.com/post/172804238487 via http://livnfresh.tumblr.com/ via Tumblr http://annchumleigh.tumblr.com/post/172804487730
